Painting is the way in which I combine imaginative thinking and imagery, combining this with the creation and construction of a canvas including a traditional aspect of portraiture to interpret my subjects. I think of my work as acknowledging tradition as well as breaking tradition through the forms that the paintings cover.
My biggest influence has been the work of Goya, by understanding his journey of transformation, through traditional styles of painting to personal imaginative and expressive art. Goya’s journey has shown me how I can progress through keeping on challenging myself and altering and refining my materials and techniques.
My process involves analytical thinking towards film imagery colliding with an abstracted canvas. Amazing scenes from films create images that strike me and stay with me. I process these scenes through my painting and drawings, creating my own scenery through the analysis of drawing, imagination and folding the image around the canvas. The three dimensionality of the canvases bring life to the paintings, requiring the viewer to take more than one view of the pieces and adapt their interpretations of what they may at first see in a sculptural form.
